welcome to putrajaya...

Putrajaya is a planned city, located south of Kuala Lumpur, that serves as the federal administrative centre of Malaysia.

The seat of government was shifted in 1999 from Kuala Lumpur due to the overcrowding and congestion there. Nevertheless, Kuala Lumpur remains as Malaysia's national capital and also as the commercial and financial centre.

Putrajaya was the brainchild of a former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad who was in power then. In 2001, Putrajaya was made a Federal Territory, increasing the number of federal territories to three. Kuala Lumpur and Labuan are the other two.

Named after the first Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra the city is situated within the Multimedia Super Corridor, beside the also newly developed Cyberjaya. The development started in 1995 and today major landmarks are completed and the population is expected to grow in the relatively new city.

the Millennium Monument (Monumen Alaf Baru)

my way to the millennium...?

The 68m tall, amber-coloured historical monument in Precinct 2 is uniquely shaped like an obelisk with etchings denoting important periods and milestones in the nation’s history.

The futuristic-looking structure that also resembles a rocket poised for launch closed soon after its official launch by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in August 2003

The overall design of the monument is based on an abstract of the national flower, the hibiscus, while the colour and texture reflect the betel leaf case. Aluminium cladding protects the entire monument.

The tapering tower represents the hibiscus stamen while the five petals are represented by a series of five ramps leading to the viewing deck. It is divided into the primary eras of pre-independence, the past (1957-1970), the present (1971-2020) and the future (2020 onwards).

The making of Malaysia...

The ramp that begins at ground level leads up to a viewing platform overlooking a lush and well-tended 26ha park. Highly visual and informative graphic panels that narrate more history enhance the walk up to the viewing platform.
